Overview
PLANT is a speculative brand project that uses gene-editing technology to extend plants’ inherent abilities, envisioning customized plants and new forms of coexistence in a changing environment.
PLANT project overview
01 The Question

What if technology could extend nature instead of replacing it?

As technology advances in response to the climate crisis, PLANT explores an alternative direction: rather than creating solutions that replace nature, what if technology could extend the abilities nature already possesses? If technology could enhance nature’s ability to adapt, what new relationships could emerge between humans and plants?

02 Why Plants?

Plants survive by changing themselves.

Plants have evolved their forms and characteristics to adapt to their environments. PLANT connects this natural adaptability with CRISPR’s ability to selectively edit genetic traits.

03 The Vision

Plants adapt to their environment—and reshape it in return.

PLANT imagines a future in 2050 where gene editing maximizes plants’ carbon-capture capacity while enhancing traits suited to specific environmental conditions.Plants can sense changes in air quality, capture fine dust, or purify contaminated water. Technology extends what plants can do, and the adapted plants, in turn, improve the environments people live in—creating a new relationship of coexistence.Technology → Plant → Environment → Human

04 The Service

Design a plant for your environment.

PLANT analyzes the user’s living environment and combines relevant plant traits to create a one-of-a-kind plant suited to a specific environment and purpose. Users can customize their own plant or choose from collections developed by researchers for particular conditions.Gene editing is translated from a specialized technology into an everyday service through which people can experience plants designed for their own lives and environments.

05 Plant Samples

One system, different plants for different environments.

Four sample plants demonstrate what PLANT could create. Each begins with the conditions of its environment, then expresses and enhances inherent plant traits that can respond to those conditions.01 AIR QUALITY Chemical sensitivity → Detects and signals changes in air quality02 FINE DUST Leaf & stem structures → Captures airborne fine dust03 POLLUTED WATER Water absorption & transport → Filters and purifies contaminated water04 EXTREME CLIMATE Water storage & adaptation → Withstands irregular water supply, cold and wind

06 Brand Approach

Reframing unfamiliar biotechnology as a warm technology for coexistence.

Gene editing can feel unfamiliar and raise concerns because it involves deliberately altering living organisms. PLANT communicates it not as a technology for controlling or replacing nature, but as a way to discover and extend plants’ inherent potential, enabling new forms of coexistence between humans and nature. This perspective is expressed through three brand principles—Technology Alive · Life-Enhancing · Inspirational Interaction—and extended into warm, organic plant imagery and a variable identity inspired by CRISPR’s logic of cutting and recombination. Rather than hiding the technology, the brand expresses a point of view on how technology should relate to nature.
